Langlois - Norman

So the Angles were a Germanic group that settle in Britain in the post-Roman period, having originated in Angeln, a modern district located in what is Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

One of these Angles finds himself living in Normandy. He is referred to as The Englishman or Langlois. One of his descendants leaves Normandy for New France and becomes ancestor to many.

Perche Population's Role in Genetic Problems in Quebec

Hereditary disorders in the French Canadian population of Quebec. II. Contribution of Perche.
De Braekeleer M, Dao TN.
Département des Sciences Humaines, Université du Québec à Chicoutimi, Canada.
In our previous paper (De Braekeleer and Dao 1994) we showed that most of the hereditary disorders present in the French Canadian population of Canada cluster in eastern Quebec. Furthermore, the disorders probably were brought to Nouvelle-France in the seventeenth century by migrants coming from Perche, France. Here, the analysis of several historical, social, and demographic factors shows that, rather than migrants coming from other French provinces, migrants from Perche came from a limited area and settled in eastern Quebec, preferentially on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. They arrived earlier than the other migrants and had a larger descendance. However, only a limited number of migrants from Perche were found in the founding nucleus of the hereditary disorders. Further analysis shows that the social system had major consequences on migration, marriage, kin network, and family behavior. Therefore the presence and the high frequency of most of the hereditary disorders in the French Canadian population appear to be the result of founder effect and genetic drift.

Reposted Quebec Medical Info From nih.gov

Population history and its impact on medical genetics in Quebec.
Laberge AM, Michaud J, Richter A, Lemyre E, Lambert M, Brais B, Mitchell GA.
Service de Génétique médicale, Hôpital Ste-Justine, Montréal, Quebec, Canada.
Knowledge of the genetic demography of Quebec is useful for gene mapping, diagnosis, treatment, community genetics and public health. The French-Canadian population of Quebec, currently about 6 million people, descends from about 8500 French settlers who arrived in Nouvelle-France between 1608 and 1759. The migrations of those settlers and their descendants led to a series of regional founder effects, reflected in the geographical distribution of genetic diseases in Quebec. This review describes elements of population history and clinical genetics pertinent to the treatment of French Canadians and other population groups from Quebec and summarizes the cardinal features of over 30 conditions reported in French Canadians. Some were discovered in French Canadians, such as autosomal recessive ataxia of the Charlevoix-Saguenay (MIM 270550), agenesis of corpus callosum and peripheral neuropathy (MIM 218000) and French-Canadian-type Leigh syndrome (MIM 220111). Other conditions are particularly frequent or have special genetic characteristics in French Canadians, including oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy, hepatorenal tyrosinaemia, cystic fibrosis, Leber hereditary optic neuropathy and familial hypercholesterolaemia. Three genetic diseases of Quebec First Nations children are also discussed: Cree encephalitis (MIM 608505), Cree leukoencephalopathy (MIM 603896) and North American Indian childhood cirrhosis (MIM 604901).

Certain Celts

Since we so strongly associate The Celts with Ireland and Scotland and maybe Wales, it's worth pointing out that some of my Celtic Heritage, i.e. my Irish ancestry, includes Normans, as was mentioned two posts ago. Further confusing things, some of the Luxembourg & German ancestors may very well have been of Celtic genetic stock, although my understanding is culturally they would have been absorbed by the future conquerors of Luxembourg and surrounding. And most Irish are believed to be of preCeltic stock, so the Celts invaded Ireland & Scotland and their culture wins out over the preCeltic inhabitants culture but they do not wipe them out genetically.

If this post is not coherent or precise, chalk it up to my attempt to summarize my understanding of the subject.

Notes on Normans

Many of my French-Canadian ancestors were from Normandy.
In addition, of my three known Irish surnames, Powers is Norman
And two of my Scottish surnames, Douglass & Hay are Norman.
Later J.S. Govin imported Guernsey cattle, Guernsey being one of two bailiwicks that are the remains of Normandy.  Queen Elizabeth II is Duke of Normany (Guernsey & Jersey)

Grandparents

My grandfather was known as Sam:
Here's his World War I diary:
And listed in the Knights of Columbus Roll of Honor
Both my grandfathers were born in the same city as my mother:
While my grandmothers were born in Menomonie:
And St. Paul:

Because these are quick notes, please excuse my lack of clarity if you stumble upon these. I hopefully will be able to translate for anyone interested in what I mean by a post.

My Family Blog Begins

This is going to be my lazy way of keeping track of things I find on the web of my genealogy.
Things found today: can add Angelina Jolie to absurd list of distant cousins. Along with a Cloutier-Watt (spokesman for Inuit), Marshall Gauvin (wrote about religion, freethinker!), a bunch of hockey players named Cloutier, etcetera.
Douglass = Black Green meaning a dark river. Same Gaelic root Dubh as Dublin, which means Black Pool. Black Pool, England faces Dublin (okay maybe that's a stretch).
Coughlin & Conway are Gaelic, while Powers (my third Irish surname in the tree) is Norman, I think. There is a Stewart of Atholl Clan, so since Christian Stewart was of Atholl maybe that's the right Clan. That Louise Cloutier was married to a settler who learned Native languages, was kidnapped by Iroquois and drowned when Louise was just 17. Childless she remarried to become my ancestor, actually had a third husband as well.
